For the past five years, the Free Mind Media infoshop/community center in Santa Rosa has served the community with a free radical library, free internet access, alternative and independent media, a community meeting space, workshops, skill shares, free skools, block parties, open mics, art shows, speakers, musicians, and has worked closely with groups like Santa Rosa Food Not Bombs and the the local October 22nd Coalition to organize around social justice issues.

We have stayed open these awesome five years funded entirely by donations from our community. The time has come, however, for Free Mind to close our doors at 546 Pacific Ave. We are closing the space but not closing down our organization. We are dedicated to continuing our work and to working towards our vision of building a stronger local community dedicated to social justice and we plan to reopen a new space as soon as we are established and ready.

This is a new beginning for us, not an end. We are shifting our focus away from maintaining a building and towards getting out into the community. A major focus for us will be continuing to distribute independent and alternative media by tabling at events in the community. With our time less focused on day to day fundraising, we are going to focus on “media for the movement” and we will strengthen our presence online and in the community with writing, creating and distributing more independent media.

In the future, when we are more firmly established, ready and able we plan to open a new community space for the public. In the mean time we will continue to host community and social justice events at different venues around Santa Rosa and Sonoma County.

Free Mind Media will continue its work with the Youth Activist Coalition of the North Bay, a coalition and network of youth activists across the North Bay fighting for social justice. This coalition, along with Free Mind Media, works along side groups like Impact! (Petaluma), Students for Democratic Society NVC (Napa), Student for Quality Education SSU (Rohnert Park), M.E.Ch.A. (several chapters across the North Bay) and many others.

We invite you to come celebrate our last five years and toast the next five at our New Beginnings Party on June 4, to be held at our current location, 546 Pacific Ave. in Santa Rosa. There will be dancing, music, reminiscing, a commemorative zine and good times.

We are not down, we are not out, we are not giving up. We are changing to adapt to our environment. We are continuing our fight, to arm you with knowledge.
